A Nurse's Call

The phone was ringing.

Erin's palms were sweaty, and her heart was pounding.

She was worried that the recipient of her call would be angry.

Then a pleasant-sounding woman picked up.

"Hello?"

"Can I speak with the parents of Sergeant Jones?" Erin asked.

The woman paused, and then replied,
"I'm sorry, he was killed in Iraq a year ago."

I took a deep breath, and I said, "I know.

I was the nurse who took care of him.

I wanted to let you know that he wasn't alone.

I held his hand."

Erin says the woman wasn't angry, and I was relieved.
