I figured out why kids do dangerous things.
The other day I'm snowboarding with my son. He goes on this double
black diamond, which is one of the toughest things you can do.
It's called "the wall" and it's straight down. And my son goes, "dad,
we should go on the wall." I said, "I actually kind of just enjoy all
my limbs. No thanks."
But he finally convinced me to do it. And I went very slowly and made
it down, get to the bottom. Before I turned around, he was going down
full speed, not stopping, not slowing down, not trying to carve and
turn. Just boom, bombed it, made it down.
I was trying to get a video of this. I look at him and he goes, "dad,
all gas, no brake!"
And I realized the difference between me and him is he was able to
bomb it because he wasn't thinking, I'm the one that has to drive home
from this place after this. No, he was thinking, oh, dad's here. It's
gonna be okay.
And how often am I afraid to do things when in a much more realistic
way, I could say, my heavenly father's here. He's got it taken care
of. He's not gonna let me fail. He's gonna pick me up if I fall. If
he's guiding me over there and it's kind of scary, he's gonna make
sure I'm gonna get through it.
What my son said to me as he bombed down a double black diamond at the ski resort
