The phone was ringing.
Erin's palms were sweaty and her heart was pounding.
She was worried that the recipient of her call would be angry.
Then a pleasant sounding woman picked up.
"Can I speak with the parents of Sergeant Jones?" Erin asked.
The woman paused and then replied, "I'm sorry, he was killed in Iraq a
year ago."
Erin took a deep breath and I said, "I know. I was the nurse who took
care of him. I wanted to let you know that he wasn't alone. I held his
hand."
